Winter Resilience & Public Safety
When winter strikes, infrastructure cannot afford to freeze. At Alexander’s, we view de-icing not just as a commodity service, but as a matter of public safety. We export large-volume Himalayan Rock Salt (Halite) to municipalities and private contractors across North America and Europe, ensuring that roads, parking lots, and walkways remain safe and operational.
Unlike synthetic de-icers which can be toxic to the environment, our rock salt is a naturally excavated mineral. It provides immediate traction upon application and creates a powerful brine that breaks the bond between ice and pavement.
High-Performance Thawing
Effective de-icing requires the right grain structure. Our rock salt is crushed to a specific coarse gradation that maximizes ‘grit’ for tire traction while ensuring a steady melt rate. It works by lowering the freezing point of water, preventing new ice from forming even as temperatures drop.
- Immediate Traction: Coarse crystals provide instant grip for tires and boots before the melting even begins.
- Effective Range: Remains highly effective at melting ice down to -15°C (5°F).
- Anti-Caking: Our salt is naturally dry and stored in moisture-controlled environments to ensure it flows freely through mechanical spreaders.
- Cost-Effective: The most economical solution for large-scale area coverage compared to calcium chloride or magnesium chloride.
Strategic Bulk Supply
In the de-icing industry, supply chain reliability is everything. A shortage during a blizzard is not an option. Alexander’s is equipped to handle high-volume contracts with a streamlined export process.
- Bulk Logistics: We ship in loose bulk vessel loads or 1-Ton Jumbo Bags (FIBC) for easy storage at municipal depots.
- Strategic Stockpiling: We encourage pre-season ordering to guarantee stock availability before the first freeze.
- Global Shipping: Seamless logistics from Karachi Port to major winter-impacted ports in the US and EU.
- Sustainability: A natural alternative that is less corrosive to concrete than many synthetic chemical blends.
With its timeless appeal, marble remains a symbol of quality and sophistication, making it an essential material in stone trade and applications worldwide.
Application & Storage
For maximum efficiency, we recommend pre-wetting the salt with a brine solution for highways, or applying it dry for parking lots where traction is the priority. Proper storage is also vital; while our salt is durable, covering your bulk piles with tarps prevents ‘leaching’ and ensures the salt retains its full melting power for the entire season.
Our logistics team can help you calculate the tonnage required based on your square footage and average seasonal snowfall.
Frequently asked questions
Is rock salt safe for concrete?
All de-icers impact concrete to some degree due to the freeze-thaw cycle. However, natural rock salt is generally considered safer for properly cured, air-entrained concrete than many concentrated chemical de-icers. We recommend sealing concrete surfaces for maximum protection.
How does this differ from the pink table salt you sell?
It is the same mineral, but the grade is different. Our De-Icing Salt is ‘Industrial Grade.’ It is darker in color due to higher insoluble mineral content, which actually helps with traction. It is not food-grade, but it is just as natural.
What is the minimum order for de-icing salt?
Because this is a high-volume product, our minimum order is typically one 20ft Container (approx. 25-28 Metric Tons). This ensures the shipping cost is viable for the buyer.
Can this be mixed with sand?
Absolutely. Many municipalities mix our rock salt with sand or grit (a 50/50 mix) to stretch their supply and increase friction on steep inclines.
